Just One More Sign

Scripture: Luke 11:29-32

29 As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, “This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. 30 What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God. 31 “The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. 32 The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent. (Luke 11:29-32 NLT)

It’s a common human impulse to say, “God, if you’ll just do this one thing for me, then I’ll believe.” We convince ourselves that our faith is just one miracle away from being unshakable. Jesus offers a sobering reality check. The crowds were pressing in, not for the message, but for the show. They wanted a “miraculous sign”—some celestial fire or undeniable proof that would bypass the need for actual heart change.

Jesus points them backward to two specific historical moments:

  • The Sign of Jonah: Jonah’s “resurrection” from the belly of the fish led a pagan city to repentance. Jesus hints that His own death and resurrection will be the ultimate sign, yet even that won’t convince a heart determined to stay closed.
  • The Wisdom of Solomon: The Queen of Sheba traveled across the known world just to listen to Solomon’s wise words. Now Jesus the Christ was standing right in front of them introducing the Gospel of the Kingdom of God!

We often look for God in the spectacular and the future, missing the “Greater One” who is standing right in front of us in the everyday present. The tragedy of the “evil generation” wasn’t a lack of evidence; it was a lack of appetite for the truth. They had the Son of God in their midst and were still asking for a magic show!

Questions for Reflection: Are you waiting for “One More Sign” before you take the next step of faith and obedience? In what ways might you be overlooking the “Greater One” because He doesn’t look like the miracle you expected?

Prayer:

Father, Please forgive me for the times I’ve demanded a sign while ignoring what you’ve already said and done. Open my eyes to see that you are already here, and give me a heart that responds to your presence more than your performance. Amen.
