God Will Come For You

Reading: Genesis 49-50; Psalm 8; Luke 20 “Soon I will die,” Joseph told his brothers, “but God will surely come for you, to lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he solemnly promised to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” (Genesis 50:24 NLT) As I read my daily Bible reading this morning, I thought back to a morning almost twenty years ago when I sat in a chair in a cabin in the forest about thirty miles southwest of where I sit today. Jean and I had recently moved back to the US after nearly two decades serving as missionaries, first in Jamaica, then inner-city London, then Africa, developing the Foundation for Christian Service course and the Bible Training Centres. We had taught and discipled men and women from many countries. It had been challenging and exciting, but on that snowy winter morning, I sat in my chair in a cabin in the woods wondering if our ministry was over and we were done. As I came to this verse, God spoke to me as clearly as he ever had in all my years as a Christ-follower. I heard the inaudible but unmistakable voice of God say “…God will surely come for you, to lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he vowed to give to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” In that moment, faith rose in my heart and replaced doubt and uncertainty. Nothing changed in my outward world, but everything changed in my heart. I knew that God wasn’t finished with Jean and me. I knew that in his way and in his time, God would surely come for us to bring us to the place and purpose he had vowed to give us! Everything that has happened in the years since I heard God’s inaudible but unmistakable voice speaking to me from his word that morning has been just as he said. Everything we have done, every challenge, every provision, every fulfillment of purpose, has flowed out of and into his promise. Prayer: Father, This is my prayer for each person who reads these words…Whatever you are facing today—whatever challenge, whatever fear, whatever need, whatever doubt or disappointment—may you hear God’s voice speaking to you and reassuring you of his promise, his purpose, and his provision. “…God will surely come for you, to lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he vowed to give to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” May it be so! In Jesus’ Name.
