May the Master of Peace himself give you the gift of getting along with each other at all times, in all ways. May the Master be truly among you! (2 Thessalonians 3:16 MSG)
People can get along with each other at some times and in some ways, no problem!
We can get along when we passionately pursue the same interests – football, fishing, food. We can get along with each other when we share a common set of beliefs and values (mostly!) We can get along with each other when we are energetically working for a common goal. We can get along when we are desperately facing a common enemy. We can get along when we have a strong leader who can keep us moving and suppress conflicts. But to get along with each other at all times, and in all ways – that’s nothing short of a gift of God’s grace!
Paul writes a blessing to the Christ-followers in the city of Thessalonica in which he refers to Jesus as the Master of Peace and prays that they will allow Jesus to be truly among them as “Master of getting along with each other.”
If we will cooperate with the Spirit of the Master of Peace, we will minimize our differences, and maximize our unity. We will minimize personal interest and ambition, and maximize our care and concern for others. We will be less concerned with making sure we get our fair slice of the prosperity and power pie, and more concerned with matters of justice and truth.
We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well. (1 Corinthians 10:24 MSG)
Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. (Philippians 2:4 MSG)
Father, I echo Paul’s prayer of blessing, and make it a prayer for me and my fellow Christ-followers around the world who read these devotional thoughts today. May the Master of Peace himself give us the gift of getting along with each other at all times, in all ways. May the Master Jesus truly be Master of “getting along with each other at all times and in all ways” among us! Amen.
