Fear Not! – Don’t Be Afraid Part 1

Scripture: Luke 12:32; John 14:27 So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom. (Luke 12:32 NLT) Last month, I wrote a series called “Don’t Worry!” Since then, our world has changed in ways I never imagined! We are in worrisome times and I feel compelled to address some things from the “Don’t Be Afraid!” perspective. I’d love for you to take time to browse through the 8 devotionals on Worry and Anxiety that we did from February 19 through 26 (You can find them here). Now I’m going to take a couple of days to think together about an often-used phrase in the Bible, “Fear Not!” But I’m going to call it “Don’t Be Afraid” and here’s why: When we read the words “Fear Not!” so often spoken by an angel, or by Jesus to his disciples when they were afraid, it’s really easy to picture a pointing finger and an attitude of rebuke! The words, “Don’t be afraid” make it easy to picture a comforting arm around your shoulder and a gentle hug! Last summer, our daughter Stephanie made a visit to the doctor for a routine checkup and got a cancer diagnosis. This began a journey through the world of scans and MRI’s and chemotherapy and surgery and more chemotherapy and still on-going radiation treatment. It was a shock to all of us. It was scary! Stephanie struggled with the fear and anxiety and sleeplessness for a few days, and received great comfort when she felt God simply said to her “Don’t be afraid!” Then one Sunday morning in church during the worship time, Stephanie felt the warm pressure of hands on her shoulders from behind. When she turned to look, there was no one there! Those words and that touch carried Stephanie and our family through months of unpleasant treatment with uncertain outcomes. Now the end of the treatment and surgery process is in sight, and the prognosis is good! “Don’t be afraid!” has been powerful for us all! Friends, don’t feel guilty for being afraid when fearful things happen. But don’t leave it at that. Let’s see what God will do! I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid! (John 14:27). Prayer: Father, Thanks for the comforting and challenging words “Don’t Be Afraid!” Please give us grace and wisdom to navigate the uncertain weeks before us! In Jesus’ Name!
