A Clear Conscience

Scripture: Acts 24:1-27

1 Five days later Ananias, the high priest, arrived with some of the Jewish elders and the lawyer Tertullus, to present their case against Paul to the governor. 2 When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented the charges against Paul in the following address to the governor: “You have provided a long period of peace for us Jews and with foresight have enacted reforms for us. 3 For all of this, Your Excellency, we are very grateful to you. 4 But I don’t want to bore you, so please give me your attention for only a moment. 5 We have found this man to be a troublemaker who is constantly stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the cult known as the Nazarenes. 9 Then the other Jews chimed in, declaring that everything Tertullus said was true. (Acts 24:1-5, 9 NLT)

Paul on trial before Felix: His accusers hired Tertullus, a smooth-talking lawyer who opened with flattery toward Felix, then leveled exaggerated claims against Paul—calling him a “troublemaker” and “ringleader of a cult.” When Paul spoke, he skipped the political games and empty flattery. He defends himself with calm, respectful honesty.

Notice what anchors Paul in the middle of false allegations: “I admit that I follow the Way, which they call a cult. I worship the God of our ancestors, and I firmly believe the Jewish law and everything written in the prophets. I have the same hope in God that these men have, that he will raise both the righteous and the unrighteous. Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and all people.” (Acts 24:14-16 NLT)

When you maintain a clear conscience before God, the weight of human opinion shrinks. People may misunderstand your motives, criticize your convictions, or twist your words. But when your life is aligned with God’s truth, you don’t need to panic or counter-attack. A clear conscience gives you quiet courage to speak truth with grace, knowing God is your ultimate judge and defender.

  • Respond, Don’t React: Paul didn’t return insults. He answered serious charges with clarity, calm respect, and facts.
  • Hope Shapes Character: Paul’s confidence in the resurrection kept his perspective anchored on eternal accountability rather than immediate vindication.
  • Truth Over Perception: Maintaining a pure heart before God is far more valuable than winning a popularity contest with people.

Prayer: Father, thank you for being my ultimate source of peace and vindication. When I’m faced with criticism or misunderstanding, help me respond with gentleness and truth rather than anger. Search my heart and remove anything that shouldn’t be there. May I live with a clear conscience before you and everyone around me. Amen.
