Scripture: Acts 17:10-15

10 That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. 12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men. 13 But when some Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God in Berea, they went there and stirred up trouble. 14 The believers acted at once, sending Paul on to the coast, while Silas and Timothy remained behind. 15 Those escorting Paul went with him all the way to Athens; then they returned to Berea with instructions for Silas and Timothy to hurry and join him. (Acts 17:10-15 NLT)

Luke’s description of the people of Berea as “open-minded” and “eager listeners” has made them heroes of Bible teachers ever since! And the fact that they “searched the Scriptures day after day” to determine if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth made them the “forever examples” of grounded faith. I’m a life-long learner, as many of you also are, and we can appreciate both their openness to the new and their respect for the old.

1. Open Hearts + Clear Heads (Verse 11). The Bereans give us the ultimate model for engaging God’s Truth. Notice their two-part posture: They were open-minded, eager listeners and serious enough about matters of faith to consistently search the scriptures to compare the “new teaching” to the “established truth.”

2. Consistency Over Intensity (Verse 11). The Bereans didn’t just do a quick skim over or a “Chapter and Verse” checklist, it was a daily habit for them. Their spiritual maturity didn’t come from emotional high points or formulas, it built gradually through daily, intentional wrestling with Scripture.

3. Faithful Community Developed Quickly (Verses 14–15). When opposition followed Paul and Silas to Berea, the local believers didn’t panic, nor did they leave Paul to fend for himself. They acted quickly, protected him, and literally walked alongside him on a long, dangerous journey to Athens to ensure his safety. God designs the Church so that when one person is under pressure or facing spiritual heat, others step up to protect, encourage, and walk with them.

Father, Today we join twenty centuries of our brothers and sisters in honoring the Bereans. We want what they had. We’re eagerly open and seriously searching to know Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! Thank you for their example! Amen!
