Philip’s Legacy
Scripture: Acts 8:36-40
36 As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?” 38 He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther north at the town of Azotus. He preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea. (Acts 8:36-40 NLT)
Two things really stand out to me from Philip’s Excellent Adventure!
First, Crossing boundaries and breaking barriers. By the standards of the day, the Ethiopian man faced immense barriers to inclusion. As a foreigner and a eunuch, he faced strict limitations under old covenant laws regarding who could fully enter the temple worship. But under the new covenant of Jesus, those barriers collapsed. God sent an evangelist to a desert road just to make sure an outsider knew he was completely welcome in God’s Kingdom and God’s Family.
Second, The birth of the Ethiopian Church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which is one of the oldest continuous Christian churches in the world, directly traces its roots back to this encounter. In their tradition, the official returned to the royal court of the Kingdom of Aksum and shared the Gospel with Queen Candace and her court. Because of his high political status as the royal treasurer, his conversion carried massive influence and planted the seeds of the faith in the region.
Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian official planted a seed in fertile soil. Philip’s encounter with one man on a desert road brought the Good News of Jesus Christ to East Africa centuries before European missionaries ever set foot there. It’s a powerful reminder that when you share the Gospel with just one person, you never truly know how many generations or nations their testimony will impact!
Meanwhile, the Spirit of the Lord dropped Philip off a few miles north at the town of Azotus. So Philip did what Philip does, he preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea! And Philip’s isn’t over yet! We’ll meet Philip again in Acts 21 and learn more about Philip and his amazing legacy!
Prayer:
Father, Thank you for Philip and his amazing adventure of faith and faithfulness. I love his sensitivity, his willingness to listen and obey, and his commitment to your Kingdom purpose. If you see him, tell him “Hi” for me and thanks for the inspiration! Amen!
