Fire From Heaven

Scripture: Luke 9:51-56

51 As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. 53 But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. 54 When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 So they went on to another village. (Luke 9:51-56 NLT)

The excitement of miracles in Galilee was transitioning toward the burden of the cross. Jesus “resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” Even though he knew exactly what awaited him in Jerusalem—betrayal, physical agony, and death—he didn’t waver. Often, when we face difficult seasons, our focus scatters. We look for exits, distractions, or people to blame. Jesus teaches us that true purpose requires a clear direction. When you know your “why,” you can endure the “how.”

It’s ironic that the Samaritans rejected Jesus not because of who he was, but because of where he was going. They allowed ancient prejudices and religious borders to stop them from welcoming the Savior of the world. Rejection is rarely about your worth; it’s often about the other person’s baggage. Jesus didn’t take it personally, and didn’t let a “no” in one village stop his “yes” to God’s mission.

The instinct of James and John—the “Sons of Thunder”—was to meet rejection with destruction: “Should we call down fire?” It’s a very human reaction. When we feel wronged or excluded, we want “fire.” We want justice, an apology, or a social media takedown. Jesus’ rebuke of His disciples is a firm reminder: You cannot share the Gospel while acting unlike the Gospel. He didn’t come to burn the village; He came to save the people in it.

Questions for us today:

  • Where is your focus? Is there a “Jerusalem” in your life—a difficult task or challenge—that you’ve been avoiding?
  • How do you handle “No”? When someone rejects your kindness or your faith, is your first instinct to “call down fire” or to simply move on to the next village?
  • Are you blocking the path? Like the people of this village, is there a prejudice or a grudge in your heart that is preventing you from welcoming Jesus today?

Prayer:

Father, Please give me the resolute focus Jesus had. Help me to stay the course even when it’s difficult. When I face rejection, guard my heart against bitterness. Teach me to respond with “next village” grace rather than the fire of revenge. Amen.
