Instructions That Bring Life - August 2007

“I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me gave me his own instructions as to what I should say. And I know his instructions lead to eternal life; so I say, whatever the Father tells me to say!” (John 12:49-50 NLT)

47-50"If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn't take it seriously, I don't reject him. I didn't come to reject the world; I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I'm saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. I'm not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That's all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you." (John 12:47-50 The Message)

49For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say." (John 12:49-50 NIV)

All of us give instructions to someone; some on a daily basis. How clear and even how Biblical are our instructions? Is it my authority – ideas or is it God’s authority - ideas? Am I in tune enough to be confident that Father God has given me his own instructions?

Jim and I are firm believers in daily Bible reading (click on Resource on the top of the front page of this web-site and then on the side for Daily Bible Reading Guide). The Bible is our instruction manual; our training manual. It is our way of learning to think and speak more like our Father. When we get a manual with a new piece of equipment or an electronic device, we many times look through it to get the basics and then put it aside and go on using the equipment or device. When we do this, we may be missing out on the full potential of the product. It can easily be the same way with the Bible. We might only read it enough to get the essence, but never enough to get the full benefit for ourselves and for those we instruct and train.

“Friendship with the Lord is reserved for those who fear him. With them he shares the secrets of his covenant.” (Psalm 25:14 NLT)

Do the instructions (the things we share with others) bring life? If the instructions come from the Father, they should bring life. Let this be our prayer: Father, I want to listen enough to be more confident that I am speaking your instructions. Lord, again I ask that you will help me to more and more bring life with the words (instructions) I share with others.

“The teaching of a wise person gives life. It is like a fountain that can save people from death.” (Proverbs 13:14)
