You Alone Are God

Reading: Amos 4-6; Psalm 86; Titus 1

8 No pagan god is like you, O Lord. None can do what you do! 9 All the nations you made will come and bow before you, Lord; they will praise your holy name. 10 For you are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God. 11 Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you. 12 With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever, 13 for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death. (Psalm 86:8-13 NLT)

Here’s the mental and spiritual process I experienced in my daily Bible reading and devotional time for today. This is a window on my soul. I hope it’s helpful to you.

I read Amos 4-6. As I read, I felt so weighted down with the prophecies of impending judgment on God’s people for their complacency, cruelty, selfishness, pride, injustice, and their false religious worship – worshiping God externally while worshiping idols in their hearts. Then I read Titus 1. As I read, I felt the weight of Paul’s concern for the church and the churches, and for how easily error creeps in. We must be alert to and courageous to confront wrongly-motivated false teaching that promises freedom, but actually puts Christ-followers in deeper bondage.

I wondered how much of Amos’ prophecy applies to my nation and to my personal life-style. I wondered if I’m being faithful in speaking out for God and truth and justice. I wondered how much of Paul’s instruction to Titus I’m faithfully living – am I teaching God’s loving, liberating truth? Am I living a life that leads people to freedom in Christ or bondage to religion or spiritual pride?

It was all just so “heavy!” I felt pressed down by it all. Nothing wrong with that – I need plenty of heart-checking, soul-searching and life-examination. But then I read Psalm 86 and found just what I needed for today. David, the Shepherd-King helped me express what I feel in my heart. This is my prayer today:
• God, you are an Awesome God! You alone are God! You always were, always are, always will be great, praiseworthy, and God alone!
• Please purify my heart, Holy God – so I may worship you in Spirit and in Truth. Teach me your ways, All-Wise God – so I may live a life of Truth and Grace.
• I will thank and praise you with all my heart for you have loved me, you have saved me, and you will keep me and care for me through all the seasons of my life.
• You alone are God! Amen!
