Walk Right Up

Walk Right Up

07 July 2010

Today’s Reading: Hosea 10-12; Psalm 73; Hebrews 4

14 Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. 15 We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. 16 So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help. (Hebrews 4:14-16 MSG)

I had an insightful experience recently. I walked into a room where I had been invited to join my friend Todd and some of his friends. When I walked through the door, it was immediately apparent that these men were a group of friends, colleagues, and peers and that I was not part of the group! I felt out of place, uncomfortable, and was thinking, “How can I slip out of here as quickly and unobtrusively as possible!?!”

Then I saw Todd across the room and I walked right up to him. Todd’s face brightened when he saw me (And so did mine!) and he took me around the room introducing me to each of his friends. As we approached each one and Todd said, “I’d like you to meet my friend, Jim Stephens,” facial expressions changed, eye contact happened, and hands were extended for firm, accepting handshakes.

We have been invited to meet God by our friend Jesus Christ who loved us and gave himself for us. Jesus is in touch with our reality; the reality of weakness, pain, disappointment, tiredness, hunger, thirst, frustration, temptation – he’s experienced it all. Think of it. God is Holy and lives in unapproachable light – no access for sinners. But God loves us. God sent to us, gave us, his son Jesus Christ so we who are anything but Holy can have ready access to him.

If I believe that – I know it’s true – then my response can simply be to walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give.

Father, Please bear with me while I think about this. I need to just think about the massive truth of these words: Through Jesus I have ready access to you, a perfectly Holy God. Between sinful me and Holy you is Jesus who is completely in touch with my reality. Completely in touch with my reality. I so desperately want to walk right up to you and get what you are so ready to give. Help me, please help me, to take the mercy and accept the help. Please. Amen!
