Truth and Love

Truth and Love

26 December 2009

3 May grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God our Father and from Jesus Christ his Son, be with us who live in truth and love. 4 How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. (2 John 3-4 NLT)

I’ve really enjoyed my quick reading through the New Testament in the past few weeks. When I read several chapters of a book or even an entire short book of three or four chapters in one sitting I get more of a big picture overview instead of merely focusing on one point or thought. I noticed this time through that Paul’s writing heavily emphasizes love. Along with his instruction about doctrine and practice, Paul speaks of God’s love for us and our love for each other. Now as I’m finishing up reading John’s gospel and his letters to the churches, I am again struck by the emphasis on truth and love. Knowing truth. Living in love.

Four words stand out above all others in John’s writings: Love, Life, Light, and Truth. In today’s reading he speaks a blessing; “May grace, mercy, and peace be with us who live in truth and love.”

In the practice of religion it is possible to functionally separate truth and love. Religion can be very legalistic and focus on truth without love. Or religion can be “warm and fuzzy” and focus on love without truth. The life of faith in Jesus Christ leads us to live in truth and love.

Father, when you look for me I want you to find me living in truth. Help me and my fellow Christ followers to live in the light of truth and in the life of love. Help us to keep it true. Help us keep it real. This morning I speak a blessing over us in the words John wrote so many years ago; “May grace, mercy, and peace be with us who live in truth and love.” May it be so. In the light and love of God and the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. May it be so.
