Then They Believed

Then They Believed

Today’s Reading: Isaiah 63-64; Psalm 107; John 2

18 But the Jews were upset. They asked, “What credentials can you present to justify this?” 19 Jesus answered, “Tear down this Temple and in three days I’ll put it back together.” 20 They were indignant: “It took forty-six years to build this Temple, and you’re going to rebuild it in three days?” 21 But Jesus was talking about his body as the Temple. 22 Later, after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this. They then put two and two together and believed both what was written in Scripture and what Jesus had said. (John 2:18-22 MSG)

I’ve been reading through Isaiah’s prophecies recently. He gave so many predictions of the future that actually happened – In history over the next four centuries, in the life and ministry of Jesus, and in the life of the church! So much of what Jesus said and did was direct fulfillment of what God had already promised or predicted in the Bible.

It helps me when I read God’s word regularly, so I can know what God has said in the Bible and how it has been fulfilled in history. When God says something in the Bible and then it plays out just as he said, it helps my faith grow stronger. It helps me believe the Bible and it helps me believe that God is still active and involved in our world.

Another thing that’s really helpful to my faith is hearing stories from other Christ-followers of how God has communicated his promises and his direction to them and how it has been fulfilled in day-to-day life experiences as they have followed his directions and obeyed his instructions.

I also need to know and believe what God has said that applies specifically to me and my life. When I allow the Holy Spirit to apply God’s word to my life and it works out just as God said, I know that God is personally involved in my life. I know that He cares about me, has a purpose for me, and is working out His plan for fulfilling my purpose.

Father, Thanks for your faith-building word. Thanks for Bible prophecies and the stories of their fulfillment. Thanks for people stories – the promises and predictions you give and how they actually happen. And thanks for your promises and encouraging words to me. I pray and look expectantly for your plans for me to actually happen!
