The Way I Think

The Way I Think

31 May 2009

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. (Romans 12:2 NLT)

There is in life a pull, like the tide-creating pull of the moon on the sea, that causes me to drift toward the thinking, the behavior, and the customs of this world. If what I see, hear, and think all grows out of this world’s customs and behaviors, then I will become part of the world system even if I don’t mean to.

I’ve got to let God transform me by changing the way I think. Part of that is getting God’s way of thinking into my mind by reading God’s Word and letting that inform my thoughts. Part of that is through associating with people who are thinking God thoughts. Part of it is through an open-minded, open-hearted life that is sensitive to God’s Spirit and responsive to his promptings.

I am in a season of transition and change. I don’t know how many more opportunities for major life-change I have remaining, but I know I must get this one right as it will shape who I am and what I do for the rest of my life.

To embrace new thinking, I’ve got to intentionally let go of old thinking. To embrace new behavior, I’ve got to intentionally turn away from old behavior.

One thing I know. If I drift passively in this season of change, I will drift toward old thought and behavior patterns. I must be intentional and determined to embrace the entire process of thought-change, attitude-change, and me-change!

Father, please transform me into a new person by changing the way I think. I want to know what you want me to do. And I want to do it. I want to know how good and pleasing and perfect your will actually is! Amen.
