The Great Reversal

The Great Reversal

03 March 2010

Today’s Reading: Numbers 32-33; Mark 10

Scripture:

“This is once again the Great Reversal: Many who are first will end up last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31 MSG)

The Great Reversal. Jesus said that many who seemed to be part of the religious in-crowd would end up out in the cold and notorious sinners who were desperately hungry for God would find a place in God’s Family. Jesus said that many who pushed and schemed and forced their way to prominence at the front would be sent to the end of the line and patient, humble servants would be promoted. Jesus said that many who worked so hard to accumulate wealth and hoard their valuable stuff would cross into eternity penniless and those who kept a loose grip on things and generously shared what they have would reap eternal rewards.

The Great Reversal. Even Jesus’ closest followers had a hard time grasping this reality. James and John stirred the others to jealousy by asking for the best positions.

42 Jesus got them together to settle things down. “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around,” he said, “and when people get a little power how quickly it goes to their heads. 43 It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. 44 Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. 45 That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.” (Mark 10:42-45 MSG)

The Great Reversal. We live in a culture of success, achievement, promotion, and recognition. Jesus is leading us to live Here And Now the values of his Forever Kingdom. First becomes last. Last becomes first. Rich ends up poor. Outsiders are in. Proud are humbled. Servants are the greatest. Giving is better than getting. It’s The Great Reversal to try to live them even in the Christ-Follower Community! Let’s give it our best shot!

Prayer:

Father, I want to embrace The Great Reversal now, not later. It’s scary if I think about it too much, but I believe it’s what really matters. Help me see it, help me embrace it, help me live it. Help me live by the upside-down, right-side-up values of the Kingdom of God. Amen.
