The Blessing

The Blessing

12 January 2009

Scripture:

Isaac said to Esau, “I have made Jacob your master and have declared that all his brothers will be his servants. I have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine—what is there left to give?” (Genesis 27:37 NLT)

Observation and Application:

Jacob had tricked his nearly blind father Isaac into speaking a blessing on him that Isaac thought he was speaking on his favorite son Esau. When Esau discovered the deception, he went to Isaac and begged for Isaac to speak words of blessing on him as well.

Isaac said, “I have made Jacob your master and I have guaranteed him an abundance. What’s left to give?”

Isaac knew an important truth that it’s easy for me to forget or overlook – the words I speak are powerful and once spoken, cannot be taken back.

The words spoken by parents to their children are powerful in blessing and powerful in cursing.

Words spoken in faith by a Christ-follower have the power to change circumstances, to alter situations, to bring life and blessing to others.

Prayer:

Father, I purpose to speak words of blessing to my wife and my children. I purpose to speak words of blessing to the people I talk to today. Help me grow in the confidence that my words can truly create good. Amen.
