Stick With This

Today’s Reading: Habakkuk 1-3; John 8

31 Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. "If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. 32 Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you." (John 8:31-32 MSG)

John chapter 8 is a pretty challenging chapter for me to read. Because we have 2000 years of the history of Christianity to look back on, it makes a little more sense now than it would have to the people in Jerusalem who were listening to Jesus’ words. But it’s still really hard to understand.

One thing that is very clear and easy to understand is that to be a Christ-follower, I’ve got to stick with it and live out what I believe – what Jesus tells me – even when it’s hard, challenging, doesn’t seem to be working out, and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Here are the key thoughts for me today:
• Stick with it, live it, don’t waver, don’t panic, don’t freak out, keep following Jesus.
• Then I will progressively, incrementally, daily, a little bit at a time, experience the truth I believe.
• As I do this, living what I believe – what Jesus tells me – will free me (bit by bit) from being driven by my desires, appetites, and emotions.

Experiencing the truth that sets me free is a life-long process, not a one-time event.

Father, I am going to stick with it and live what I believe – what I believe about you and what I believe about your son Jesus Christ. Help me to be steady, unflappable, and to be an encouragement to others who are journeying with me. I trust you to continue working in me to free me from myself. Amen.
