Special To God

Special To God

02 February 2010

Today’s Reading: Exodus 33-34; Psalm 16; Acts 9

Scripture:

God said to Moses: “All right. Just as you say; this also I will do, for I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by name.” (Exodus 33:17 MSG)

God had brought the Israelis out of Egypt and now had the even bigger task of bringing them into the land he promised Abraham he would give them. Even under Moses’ strong leadership, things were on the verge of unraveling. God got frustrated with the waywardness of the Israelis and threatened to wipe them out, offering Moses the honor of being the new patriarch of a new “People of God.” (Was God testing Moses’ integrity to see if he loved the people as much as he loved himself?)

Then God said, “Alright, I’ll see that you get into the land, but I won’t go with you. I’ll send an angel to take you in.” (Am hungry for God’s presence, or merely after his provision?)

Moses responded, “If you don’t personally go with us, then call it off. The only way we can know we’re special to you is if you personally go with us.” (Do I ever keep on doing “God’s Work” even at the cost of my relationship with him and others?)

God said, “I’ll personally go with you because I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by name.” (Do I live with the daily confidence that I’m Abba’s Child and that I’m special to him?)

God will be with you and me. God will go with us on the journey from sin-slavery to Spirit-freedom because he knows us and we are special to him. We have a personal relationship with the God of heaven and earth through faith in his Son Jesus Christ. He knows us by name. He is our Abba Father. He will go with us.

God said, “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey to the end.” (Exodus 33:14 MSG)

Prayer:

Father, Thanks for the assurance that I’m special to you and that you know me by name. Thanks for going with Jean and me through all the years of life and ministry and success and failure and challenge and victory and joy and sorrow and for the rest of the journey, too. Thanks for going with us. Amen.
