Sound of a Hammer

Sound of a Hammer

20 May 2009

The stones used in the construction of the Temple were prefinished at the quarry, so the entire structure was built without the sound of hammer, ax, or any other iron tool at the building site. (1 Kings 6:7 NLT)

Picture Solomon’s Temple construction site. Thousands of laborers doing all sorts of building tasks. The shouts of the foremen, the chants of the workers as they carried materials or rolled huge stones into place. The braying of donkeys, the lowing of oxen, and the clatter of wooden wheels. But one sound was noticeably absent from the Temple construction site – the sound of hammers and chisels and axes.

The stones were shaped at the quarry so when they reached the building site they were just the right size and shape for the specific place they were to occupy in the Temple.

I thought of the detailed plans this required and the precise attention to those details at the quarry, to choose and shape each stone just right so that when it arrived at the building site it could be slid into place and it matched the spot and fit with the stones below and on each side perfectly. (Here’s stone WWT2, 3SFSWC, TSU, TSO. That would be West Wall Tier 2, Third Stone From SW Corner, This Side Up, This Side Out.)

The selection and the shaping of the stones was done at the quarry rather than the building site. Each stone was ready to fit when it arrived. No sledge hammers pounding, trying to fit a round stone in a square hole. No hammers and chisels trying to knock the edges off a stone that just wouldn’t seem to go into its place.

God has a plan for his Church. God chooses stones for the house he’s building and begins to shape them from the moment he cuts them out of the quarry. God brings the stones to the Temple to fit in specific places he has prepared for them and shaped them for. God knows who goes where.
• Let’s look for God’s quarry markings on each stone and try to find where it fits.
• If it doesn’t fit, don’t force it. If it doesn’t fit, don’t re-shape it. There’s a spot for it!
• Let’s not put the stone in place before God is through shaping it at the quarry.

Father, please help us to be strategic in planning, gentle in shaping, and sensitive in placing. Shape us and place us according to your eternal and perfect plan. No Hammers in the Temple! Amen.
