Some vs Best

Some vs Best

Reference(s): Genesis 4:2-7

2 Later she gave birth to a second son and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain was a farmer. 3 When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought a gift - the best of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his offering, 5 but he did not accept Cain and his offering. This made Cain very angry and dejected. 6 “Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked him. “Why do you look so dejected? 7 You will be accepted if you respond in the right way. But if you refuse to respond correctly, then watch out! Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, and you must subdue it.” (Genesis 4:2-7 NLT)

Observation & Application

Some interesting thoughts here for me this morning. The difference between just bringing some to God or bringing the best. If we start to give God only some of what He has blessed us with, it is the beginning of a downward slide. Cain, it seems, could not be bothered doing the right thing and bringing the best. This began for him the slide to committing murder. He became angry with God, with Abel, and basically with the world. When we fail to do right, the scripture tells us that sin is at the door and that it is up to us to master it by doing right.

Lord, I want to keep sin at bay by doing what is right. I want to be careful that I do not get so upset when I think others are getting away with sin. Help me to remember that is not my problem. I just want to know you, love you and do what is right. AMEN
