Solomon's Reputation

Solomon's Reputation

25 May 2009

When the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s reputation, which brought honor to the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. (1 Kings 10:1 NLT)

Solomon’s reputation as a wise, wealthy, and powerful man reached far and wide. He was not only an effective leader, but also a good manager. Everything in his kingdom worked and worked well. He used his wisdom to create order, his wealth to create more wealth, and his power to maintain peace.

The parallel account in 2 Chronicles tells us that not only the Queen of Sheba came to see for herself, but “Kings from every nation came to visit him and to hear the wisdom God had given him.” (2 Chronicles 9:23)

Solomon’s reputation brought honor to the name of the Lord. But reputation is not the same as character. Reputation is external, based on what others can see. Character is internal, based on integrity, right values, and discipline. Solomon’s reputation brought honor to the name of the Lord until his character flaws turned him into an idol worshiper.

Father, I want a good reputation – a reputation that brings honor to your name. Like Solomon, I desire a reputation for wisdom. But what I need your help with most is the continual process of developing Godly character. I know that flawed character can ruin a God-honoring reputation in a moment. Please help me keep character in the forefront and let reputation take care of itself. Amen.
