Power To Bless

Power To Bless

12 December 2009

And without question, the person who has the power to bless is always greater than the person who is blessed. (Hebrews 7:7 NLT)

Yesterday was my annual Christmas shopping expedition with my daughter Melissa. Jean had Jude and Zane for the afternoon and Melissa and I ventured out onto busy streets, icy parking lots, and crowded shops and stores where customers were jostling for place in the aisles and checkout lines. It didn’t take me long to get a little edgy.

Melissa shopped carefully, thoughtfully, and courteously. I was more in “get in, get the stuff, and get out” mode! I noticed that Melissa smiled at each person she made eye contact with and specifically thanked each cashier and wished them well.

She told me that the day before she had waited in a long line at the post office. When she was eventually served by a harried postal clerk she thanked him and expressed appreciation and understanding for the pressure he and his fellow workers were under (due to the last-minute behavior of people like me, actually!). Melissa’s thanks and appreciation almost brought him to tears! He thanked her for thanking him!

God has given us the power to bless. His covenant with our Faith-father, Abraham, began with the promise, “I will bless you and you will be a blessing.” The great thing about the life of faith is not only that I am blessed – as great as that is – but that I can be a blessing.

I can be a blessing to others by being courteous and appreciative, by speaking words of encouragement, by praying for people, by giving my money and my stuff to help others, by serving people with my time and my skills, and by becoming all God has purposed for me to be.

God has given you and me the power to bless! If you and I were superheroes, our super power would be the Power to Bless! Let’s use our Super-sight and Super-hearing to spot opportunities to exercise the Power to Bless today.

Father, I am so blessed. You’ve been so good to me and I really appreciate that. And I know that you have given me the Power to Bless. Help me to be alert and aware of opportunities that you place in my path to bless and be a blessing. Amen.
