Our Hearts

17 May 2009

17 "I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. You know I have done all this with good motives, and I have watched your people offer their gifts willingly and joyously. 18 O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. 19 Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, decrees, and principles, and to build this Temple, for which I have made all these preparations.” (1 Chronicles 29:17-19 NLT)

David, the man after God’s own heart, understood that everything that really matters is a matter of the heart. He prayed…
• God, I know you examine our hearts and rejoice to find integrity there.
• Good motives produce joyous giving and serving.
• Oh Lord, may your people always love you and have a heart to obey you.
• Give my son the wholehearted desire to obey you always.

Paul also prayed for Christ-followers that our good motives would be fulfilled in faithful deeds... And so we keep on praying for you, that our God will make you worthy of the life to which he called you. And we pray that God, by his power, will fulfill all your good intentions and faithful deeds. (2 Thessalonians 1:11 NLT)

I want the same things for me and for those I influence that David wanted for Solomon and that Paul wanted for the Thessalonian Christ-followers. I want to wholeheartedly obey God’s commands and influence others to do the same. I want to live by God’s directions and counsel and influence others to do the same. I want to express my good intentions with faithful deeds and influence others to do the same.

Father, I pray for myself and my wife and children and all I influence. I pray for my brothers and sisters around the world who read these words… Please give us integrity, pure motives, and honest hearts. May our good intentions be fulfilled in faithful deeds that give you joy and bring you honor. In Jesus’ Name.
