Opportunity To Believe

Opportunity To Believe

09 August 2009

14 Then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sake, I am glad I wasn’t there, because this will give you another opportunity to believe in me. Come, let’s go see him.” (John 11:14-15 NLT)

Jesus had left Jerusalem and crossed the Jordan to stay in the little village of Ephraim because the Jewish leaders were trying to kill him. When word reached Jesus that his good friend Lazarus was sick, Jesus waited a couple of days and then told his disciples he was going to go and wake him up.

When Jesus said “Lazarus is asleep,” they thought that meant he was getting better, but then Jesus said, “He is dead. I waited for this to happen because this will give you another opportunity to believe in me.”

Sometimes the worse things get, the more opportunity it gives us to believe in Jesus. Seeing a man brought back to life after being dead four days had a much greater impact on their faith than seeing a deaf person’s hearing restored or even seeing someone cured of leprosy.

I don’t like it when things go wrong. I especially don’t like it when things are going from bad to worse and God doesn’t seem to be doing anything about it. It’s tough on my faith and on my peace of mind.

Jesus looks at it differently. He sees the greater problem as a greater opportunity to believe in him. He sees escalating crisis as an opportunity for increasing faith.

Father, I need some help me with this! I see the principle here. I see the lesson you taught Peter and Thomas and John and the others. I see it. I need your grace to live it. I want to grow in mature faith to the point that I face escalating problems as growing opportunities to believe. This is all kind of scary to think about, but I trust you. I do.
