Only In This Way

Scripture:

14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—Jesus also became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he deliver those who have lived all their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. (Hebrews 2:14-15 NLT)

Because we are the way we are – human beings made of flesh and blood – the only way God could redeem us, save us, and bring us into relationship with him for eternity was for God to become Jesus by being born in human form.

We couldn’t bridge the gap and go to him, so he built the bridge and came to us.

Three times in these two verses the word “only” is used:

• Only as a human being could he die.
• Only by dying could he break the power of the Devil.
• Only in this way could he deliver those (us) who have lived our lives as slaves to the fear of death.

Jesus was the only one who could do it. Jesus could only do it by coming to us and becoming one of us. Jesus could only do it by dying for us – in our place.

This morning I am wondering if there is anything God wants to do that can only be done by me – by my willingness to make myself available – to build a bridge, to give of myself, to sacrifice my preferences to his will.

Prayer:

Father, is there something you want done that only I can do for you? Is there something that I can only do if I’m willing to submit and sacrifice and serve? I offer myself for your service. I know I’m not the only one, but I want to be sure I do what only I can do for you.
