Living To Give

Living To Give

01 June 2009

25 The desires of lazy people will be their ruin, for their hands refuse to work. 26 They are always greedy for more, while the godly love to give! (Proverbs 21:25-26 NLT)

The Wise Teacher contrasts greedy people (The Desire To Acquire) with godly people (Loving and Living To Give).

Paul says, 9 For the commandments against adultery and murder and stealing and coveting—and any other commandment—are all summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to anyone, so love satisfies all of God’s requirements. (Romans 13:9-10 NLT)

There’s more involved in being a sinner than wanting what you don’t have, but greed is a big part of keeping the focus on self and off of God and others. It’s easy to allow my selfish nature to direct my attention to all the stuff I don’t have but feel like I really deserve.

When I love others from the heart, I find myself looking for creative and helpful ways of giving what I do have. It’s no good to say, “If I had a million dollars, I’d give some of it to help meet other people’s needs.” The important thing is that I give generously and creatively now out of what I have now.

Father, I want to give more generously out of what I have. I know you repay what I give to the poor. I know that giving is planting seed and there will be a harvest of the good seed I plant by giving to the needs of others. Help me get my focus off what I want and need and onto how I can give more generously and creatively out of what I have. Amen.
