Interested In Others

Interested In Others

12 June 2009

3 Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. 4 Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing. (Philippians 2:3-4 NLT)

It’s easy to become so focused on what’s going on in my own life that I don’t really give other people’s situations a lot of attention. Whether it’s concerns for my needs and my future, or busyness at my tasks and responsibilities, I can end up thinking only about my own affairs.

Paul was writing this letter from a prison cell, not sure what would happen to him (See vs 17, 23), and yet his concern was for his friends and fellow Christ-followers. His joy was in their faith, growth, and steady progress.

So many of my friends and fellow Christ-followers are facing great challenges. For some of us, it’s times of seasonal transition. For many it’s financial, and involves uncertainty about business, employment, retirement, income – the most basic needs. For some it’s great obstacles to the fulfillment of ministry assignments.

This morning I’ve been examining my attitude and my actions when I’m with my friends. I’m disappointed to discover that too much of my concern has been about the challenges and changes in my own life and not nearly and clearly enough concern and interest in what’s happening to them.

It’s been kind of like, “How you doing? Oh, really? Let me tell you about MY situation!”

I’m accepting Paul’s challenge today… “Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others and what they are doing.” Care to join me?

Father, You’ve given Jean and me your word – your faithful word – that you have good plans and more than adequate provision for us and for our future. I’m going to believe your word and trust your faithful character. That will free me up to truly be interested in others and what they are doing and what they are facing. Now, I’ve said it. But you know what a worrier I am. It’s only by your grace and strength I’m going to carry it through. Here we go…! Amen.
