If You Forgive

If You Forgive

18 August 2009

22 Then he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you refuse to forgive them, they are unforgiven.” (John 20:22-23 NLT)

The resurrected Christ breathed the Holy Spirit into his disciples gathered in the room. There may have been more than ten (eleven minus Thomas). There may have been some of the women present as well (See Luke 24:33). There’s no evidence to exclude others from the room.

Then Jesus said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Now you can forgive like God does.”

It takes Holy Spirit power to forgive like God does.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not just about ever-present guidance, not just about power to activate and use spiritual gifts. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is about the power and grace to forgive. To forgive sins. To forgive those who sin against us and hurt us. I’ve got the power through the Holy Spirit to forgive sins.

If you forgive the sins that are sinned against you, you’re setting the offender free and you’re setting yourself free. And think about this. If you don’t forgive the sins of someone who sins against you, what are you going to do with them? They remain unforgiven and unforgiven sins can eat you alive!

Father, I thank you for the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. I thank you for empowering me to forgive sins. Help me as I search through the rooms of my heart to see if there are any pockets of unforgiveness and help me as I root out and forgive any unforgiven sins. I really don’t know what to do with them if I don’t forgive from the heart.
