If You Build It

If You Build It

03 January 2010

Today’s Reading: Genesis 6-8; Luke 3

Scripture:

7 Noah and his wife and sons and their wives boarded the ship to escape the flood. 8 Clean and unclean animals, birds, and all the crawling creatures 9 came in pairs to Noah and to the ship, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. (Genesis 7:7-9 MSG)

“If you build it, they will come!” I thought of this quote from the Kevin Costner movie, “Field of Dreams” as I read the story of Noah today. God gave Noah a huge assignment – to build a boat large enough to hold Noah, his family, and representative samples of all the animals.

Noah was faithful and obedient, and he stayed with the assignment until he had completed it exactly according to God’s instructions. There was one thing that Noah couldn’t do, however, and that was to go out and round up exactly two – one male and one female – of every species on earth. Only God could do that part. And he did.

As Noah faithfully completed his assignment and readied the boat for its voyage, God brought the animals to him, so he checked them off his list and loaded them aboard.

In every God assignment, there’s the part that I must do and the part that only God can do. If I don’t do my part, it is simply not going to happen. But if I leave off doing my part to worry and fret, or make attempts in my own ability to do God’s part as well, it’s still not going to happen. I’ve got to be clear on what my part is and what God’s part is and stay in my assignment. God is already clear on his part!

Prayer:

Father, I realize that the first part of every task you assign me is to determine what is my responsibility – to be really clear on that – and what is your responsibility. Help me to enter this new year with a fresh approach to my God-assignment. I purpose, with your guidance, to determine up front what you’re asking me to do and to remember that there’s a part that you alone can do to make it happen. Please help me to be clear and faithful in doing my part. I know you’ll do your part. In Jesus’ Name.
