God Will Make Things Work Out

Today’s Reading: Genesis 23-24; Luke 9

37 My master made me promise, ‘Don’t get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I live. 38 No, go to my father’s home, back to my family, and get a wife for my son there.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘But what if the woman won’t come with me?’ 40 He said, ‘God before whom I’ve walked faithfully will send his angel with you and he’ll make things work out so that you’ll bring back a wife for my son from my family, from the house of my father.' (Genesis 24:37-40 MSG)

Long title, powerful truth! I love this story about Abraham’s faith in God, his trust in his life-long servant, and his servant’s simple faith in Abraham’s God. Life gets complicated. Simple faith in a big God is more than adequate for big challenges!

Abraham’s story honestly shows the ups and downs, the doubts and fears, the weaknesses and strengths of this man of God – the Father of the faithful. Now, in his old age, Abraham’s faith had become settled and solid. He trusted God to make things work out when it was all outside his control. He trusted his servant to act wisely and responsibly. He trusted that God was able to bring about the promised result even when it involved people he didn’t know and circumstances he couldn’t control.

This settled and solid faith that had grown in Abraham over a life-time of walking with God had become transferable. It rubbed off on his servant and it prompted faith response in others.

I believe that can be true for you and me. I believe that as we honestly and transparently live a life of faith, wrestling with our doubts and fears, facing each new challenge with trusting obedience, our faith can rub off on others. I believe that as we interact with others who are not so far along in their faith journey, our settled faith will help them courageously face their doubts and fears and inspire them to move more confidently through the challenges of life.

What about it, old-timers? We know God will make things work out. There’s a new generation of Christ-followers who need the encouragement of a settled, solid faith. Are you up for it?

Father, Please help me and those of my faith-generation stay active and involved with those who are just getting started on their journey. Help us to use our settled, solid faith to encourage others that “God will make things work out!” Amen.
