God Overheard

God Overheard

23 February 2010

Today’s Reading: Numbers 12-13; Psalm 90; Mark 2

1 Miriam and Aaron talked against Moses behind his back of because his Cushite wife (he had married a Cushite woman). 2 They said, “Is it only through Moses that God speaks? Doesn’t he also speak through us?” God overheard their talk. (Numbers 12:1-2 MSG)

I know this touches on one of the most fundamental things we know about God – that he is omnipresent – but today it really resonated with me. God overheard their talk. In this case, Aaron and Miriam, Moses’ older brother and sister, started criticizing Moses and questioning his role in leadership of Israel. God overheard.

I need to remember that God overhears every conversation. He overhears every conversation I’m involved in and every conversation about me.

Take a look at this verse from Malachi. 16 Then those whose lives honored God got together and talked it over. God saw what they were doing and listened in. A book was opened in God’s presence and minutes were taken of the meeting, with the names of the God-fearers written down, all the names of those who honored God’s name. (Malachi 3:16 MSG)

God not only overhears critical and jealous conversations, he intentionally listens to Godly and God-honoring conversations and he takes notes on what he hears!

God overhears. When I engage in conversations that are critical of another of God’s children, he overhears and is both concerned and willing to get involved. When I talk of good things, God hears and approves. God overhears.

Father, Help me to be God-hearted and good-hearted in my conversations with my brothers and sisters and my conversations about other brothers and sisters. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14 NIV) Amen.
