Give In Give Out

Give In Give Out

22 January 2010

Today’s Reading: Exodus 3-5; Luke 22

Scripture:

31 “Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. 32 Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.” (Luke 22:31-32 The Message)

Don’t give in or give out. Temptation, fear, anxiety, pressure from others, and discouragement are things that might cause someone to give in. Weariness, boredom, delay, or pain might cause someone to give out.

Jesus had something for Peter to do – turn to his companions and give them a fresh start – but it was on the other side of a time of testing more severe than he had ever experienced yet. Jesus spoke words of commission to Peter that looked forward in faith, looked past Peter’s upcoming failure and heartbreak, to a season of significant service to others.

Much of what the Master has for each of us to do is on the other side of a time of testing. Jesus prayed for Peter that he not give in or give out. Who is praying for me that I not give in or give out?

I am determined not to give in or give out until I’ve done all that Jesus has in mind for me to do. I need a few close relationships with people who know what Jesus told me to do and will remind me of the commission that is on the other side of the time of testing. I must intentionally build a few close relationships with people who will pray for me when I am in no condition to pray for myself.

Who is praying for you that you not give in or give out?

Prayer:

Father, I am thankful for the seasons of blessing and the moments of rejoicing you bring my way. I am willing (but not eager!) to face the times of testing with the assurance there is purpose on the other side. Please give me friends who will pray for me that I not give in or give out. And let me strengthen my companions and give them a fresh start. Amen.
