For His People

For His People

29 April 2009

And David realized that the Lord had made him king over Israel and had made his kingdom great for the sake of his people Israel. (2 Samuel 5:12 NLT)

A generation earlier, when Saul became successful as a warrior-king, he built a monument to himself. As David’s kingship prospered, he realized that God had given him success for the sake of his people – for the sake of God’s people who had become David’s people when God made David their king.

How easy it is to forget why God does what he does. When things are going well and we are enjoying some success and prosperity it’s so easy to begin to think that it’s all because we are so smart or because we are working so hard or because we deserve it. Or we can begin to think that God is blessing us because he likes us better, or that he wants us to just enjoy success for the sake of our own ego, or that somehow he’s blessing us because we deserve it!

A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church. (1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT)

Paul reminded the Corinthians that God has given every person a gift, or talent, or ability and that every gift is given to be used for the benefit of others.

Father, please help me to remember that it’s for the sake of your people! We shepherd the flock because they are your people and you love them and want them to be well led and well fed. We reach out to the lost because you love them and want them to be redeemed and to become part of your family and to live and not die. We serve, using our gifts and abilities, not for our own benefit but for others. Help us to remember the reason behind it all. Amen.
