Fear Bad News

Fear Bad News

16 August 2009

5 Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly. 6 Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. 7 They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. 8 They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly. 9 They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor. (Psalm 112:5-9 NLT)

Verse 7 from this section is one of my verses for daily reading. Each morning as I start my day, I let God’s Word remind me that I don’t have to fear the unknown and uncertain future.

Yesterday I heard from a friend in another state that his wife had just been diagnosed with cancer that is “advanced, inoperable, and aggressive.” With that shocking news, they now suddenly have to move from dealing with financial challenges stemming from changes in his employment to dealing with her life-threatening illness. And the financial challenges remain.

I know that bad news can come at any time – the 3:00 AM phone call, the unfavorable diagnosis, the financial loss, the breakup of a relationship. Bad news can come at any time, but as children of God, we don’t have to live in fear of bad news!

You and I can live in faith and freedom, knowing that when bad news comes, God will care for us, comfort us, and provide the wisdom and the inner strength to walk forward through the pain and darkness.

When bad news comes, we’ll face it trusting in God’s love and care, relying on his grace.

Father, thank you that you are already mobilizing the resources of grace and faith for my friend and his wife and family as they face the greatest challenge of their lives. Thank you that whatever happens and whenever it happens, we can face it trusting in your love, relying on your grace. Thank you that we don’t have to fear bad news. Amen.
