Destroy Them All

Destroy Them All

23 June 2011

Reading: 2 Kings 10; 2 Chronicles 22-23; 1 Timothy 5

18 Then Jehu called a meeting of all the people of the city and said to them, “Ahab’s worship of Baal was nothing compared to the way I will worship him! 19 Therefore, summon all the prophets and worshipers of Baal, and call together all his priests. See to it that every one of them comes, for I am going to offer a great sacrifice to Baal. Anyone who fails to come will be put to death.” But Jehu’s cunning plan was to destroy all the worshipers of Baal. 20 Then Jehu ordered, “Prepare a solemn assembly to worship Baal!” So they did. (2 Kings 10:18-20 NLT)

Jehu ordered the execution of all seventy of the sons of Ahab, Israel’s wicked king, then arranged the mass killing of all the worshippers of Baal. In today’s parallel reading in 2 Chronicles, Jehoida the priest ordered the execution of evil queen Athaliah so that he could place Joash on the throne and restore the worship of God in Judah. It was bloody and harsh, but it purged the evil from the land so that a good king could restore true worship of God.

I don’t enjoy reading these stories of brutal and bloody executions. I don’t allow myself to imagine these scenes in much detail. I certainly wouldn’t recommend it for viewing as a movie. I’ve got to remind myself that I’m reading this devotionally and not just as history. So here’s the personal application I take from these stories today:
• I must be decisive and ruthless in purging evil from my heart. Selfishness, greed, pride, fear, indecisiveness – all these are like the evil sons of Ahab that, if allowed to rule in my heart, will draw me away from allegiance to King Jesus.
• I must identify and bring them out of the Temple of my heart by Holy Spirit conviction, confession, and repentance.
• These sinful attitudes and the behaviors they produce are placed on Jesus, crucified with Christ in his once-for-all sacrifice for sin. I am freed from their tyranny!
• Then as Christ rose from death by the power of the Spirit, by his Spirit I am free to live a Christ-obedient and God-honoring life of faith.

Father, I have outlined the theology of it in the paragraphs above. Now please empower me by your Spirit to put the truth into practice today. I determine to serve King Jesus and to no longer serve the sinful attitudes and desires of the old nature. Thank you for your power and your grace. Amen.
