Crying The Blues

Crying The Blues

30 March 2010

Today’s Reading: Judges 8; Psalm 42; 1 Corinthians 15

Scripture:

Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God— soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God. (Psalm 42:5 MSG)

Life has its ups and downs. Sometimes the downs are really down and it seems like I kind of get stuck. God has given us a way to get back on an even keel when we get down, when we are stuck crying the blues.

When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse everything I know of you... (Psalm 42:6a)

This is where we practice “Rehearsing everything we know of God.”

The tools we have to work with are:
• The Bible verses God’s Spirit has quickened to us in the past and present.
• The words of encouragement others have given us.
• The things we know about God’s goodness and his specific purpose for our lives.

The way we use these tools is to pray, think, and speak in agreement with them.

Then God promises to love me all day, sing songs all through the night! My life is God’s prayer. (Psalm 42:8 MSG)

Start now to put your plan in place for “Fixing your eyes on God” when you are at an emotional low ebb – when you find yourself stuck crying the blues. Identify a friend you can talk to who will challenge you to exercise your faith. Practice the discipline of daily Bible reading and journaling so God can talk to you. Make a list of verses that speak the truth about God’s love for you, his purpose for your life, his promises to you.

Then “When your soul is in the dumps, rehearse everything you know of God!”

Prayer:

Father, Thanks for your faithfulness, goodness, and truth. Thanks for coming to help us when our souls are in the dumps. Give us presence of mind and determination of will to use the tools you give us when we need them most. Amen.
