Clear Thinking - Common Sense

Clear Thinking - Common Sense

25 May 2011

Reading: Proverbs 1-3; Romans 7

Scripture:

21 Dear friend, guard Clear Thinking and Common Sense with your life; don’t for a minute lose sight of them. 22 They’ll keep your soul alive and well, they’ll keep you fit and attractive. (Proverbs 3:21-22 The Message)

I’ve been thinking about how I live my day-by-day, moment-by-moment life. If I don’t keep Clear Thinking and Common Sense at the very center of my thought processes, I’ll tend to live out of my old self (See Romans 7) instead of my new “In Christ” self (See Ephesians 1)

We all have emotional responses or reactions to what we’re facing or experiencing in the moment – fear, joy, anger, frustration, compassion, anxiety – these are all real to us in the moment and if we consistently think, speak, and act only out of these emotions we often hurt ourselves or others. Emotional reactions and responses are sometimes good, but too often lead to regret.

Clear Thinking and Common Sense slows us down for a moment and lets us view the current experience through the lens of God’s Truth about ourselves, others, and life. Then when we speak or act, the response is different (better) and the outcome is something we can better live with – usually less painful for ourselves and others in the long run.

21 Dear friend, guard Clear Thinking and Common Sense with your life; don’t for a minute lose sight of them. 22 They’ll keep your soul alive and well, they’ll keep you fit and attractive. 23 You’ll travel safely, you’ll neither tire nor trip. 24 You’ll take afternoon naps without a worry, you’ll enjoy a good night’s sleep. 25 No need to panic over alarms or surprises, or predictions that doomsday’s just around the corner, 26 Because God will be right there with you; he’ll keep you safe and sound. (Proverbs 3:21-26 The Message)

Prayer:

Father, Please help me to learn (I know it’s not too late!) how to live out of who I am in Christ rather than out of how I feel in the moment. I want to make Clear Thinking and Common Sense the core of my response process. Help me do that and help me impart that understanding to others. Please.
