Books And Life

Books And Life

11 September 2010

Today’s Reading: Daniel 1-2; Revelation 16

Scripture:

God gave these four young men knowledge and skill in both books and life. In addition, Daniel was gifted in understanding all sorts of visions and dreams. (Daniel 1:17 MSG)

Daniel and his young friends had knowledge and skill in both books and life. It seems like we are constantly learning to balance theory and application, facts and faith, practicality and spirituality.

• For some, truth is more technical and the emphasis is all about exactness and correctness. It’s about clear thinking and having the right doctrines and interpretations, methods and procedures.
• For some, faith is more practical and functional. It’s all about living out the principles of scripture and the commands of Jesus and the lessons from God’s Word in the details of life and in the interactions of our relationships.
• For some spirituality is primarily experiential and it’s all about how it feels and what’s happening – to me – right now. It’s about openness, sensitivity, and willingness to “follow the leading of the Spirit.”

God gave Daniel and his friends knowledge and skill in both books and life and in addition to that, Daniel had the gift of understanding visions and dreams. Daniel and his friends were practical enough that they could function effectively as top governors in the Babylonian Empire and spiritual enough that they were willing to risk everything to stand for what they believed.

Knowledge and skill in both books and life is good. I want to grow in the balance between knowledge and wisdom, practicality and spirituality. I want enough knowledge and skill in books that I’m not swayed by every experience or vision that someone has and I want enough knowledge and skill in life that I can live well and lead well.

Prayer:

Father, I believe that if you can give Daniel and his friends knowledge and skill in both books and life, you can do the same for me and you can do the same for young people who are beginning their life of faith and discipleship. Please fill us with knowledge and wisdom, truth and experience. Please gift us with sensitivity and spiritual understanding as well. May we live well and wisely. May we represent you faithfully. Amen.
