Be Glad

Be Glad

02 December 2009

Scripture:

9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. 12 Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! 17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. (Romans 12:9-18 NLT)

If you rushed through the verses above, please take a moment and go back and read through them slowly. Paul speaks out of his submission to Christ and love for people and here lays out a simple and clear pattern for life and living. Let the words flow over you and stir in you a passion to live and act today in a faith-filled, Christ-imitating manner. I know it’s not as easy as it looks, but doesn’t this make you want to live exactly the way Paul spells it out?

This morning, the phrase from the first part of verse 12 means a lot to me… “Be glad for all God is planning for you.”

Right now there’s a lot coming up for so many of us that we can’t control or see the other side of. The sense of being in control and knowing what to expect next is really an illusion at the best of times. Remember that in it all, God can control it, he does see the other side, and he is planning the very best outcome for us.

I will be glad for all God is planning for me, even though I don’t see how it’s going to work out.

Prayer:

Father, I am glad for all you are planning for me. I am confident you have my best interests and also the best interests of others in mind, so your plan is good, better, and best. And I embrace both the known and the unknown (to me) elements of it. Amen.
