And Finally

And Finally

27 July 2009

Scripture:

5 So make every effort to apply the benefits of these promises to your life. Then your faith will produce a life of moral excellence. A life of moral excellence leads to knowing God better. 6 Knowing God leads to self-control. Self-control leads to patient endurance, and patient endurance leads to godliness. 7 Godliness leads to love for other Christians, and finally you will grow to have genuine love for everyone. (2 Peter 1:5-7 NLT)

Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever REALLY get it! I mean will I ever really understand what is the most important thing – the thing God is trying to build in me through everything I do, everything he does, everything that he allows into my life. Will I ever really get it?

If I make every effort (I know I am supposed to work hard, right?) to apply the benefits of all God’s promises, then my faith will produce a life of moral excellence. Ok, that’s it.

But wait! Moral excellence leads to knowing God better. OK, that’s it. The ultimate thing is knowing God better!

Knowing God better leads to self control. Ok, then self-control is my ultimate goal!

Self-control leads to patient endurance. I’m not sure I am inclined to put patient endurance up there at the top of the list of qualities I am striving for. How about instant results? I think instant results sounds good.

Patient endurance leads to godliness. That’s it! Godliness. What? Not there yet?

Godliness leads to love for other Christians. Now I know it’s important to love other Christians. I know God says that they’ll know we are Christians by our love, not by our religious behavior. But wait, there’s more!

And Finally… Finally I will grow to have genuine love for everyone, loving like Jesus.

Prayer:

Father, please help me to get it. Help me today, as I think about these words from your Word, to grow one step closer to really understanding what is important to you. Please help me understand that what Paul meant in 1 Corinthians 13:13 when he wrote “The greatest of these is love.”
