An Understanding Heart

An Understanding Heart

18 May 2009

Scripture:

“Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9 NLT)

Observation:

After the kingdom was firmly established in Solomon’s grasp, he went to Gibeon to the ancient Tabernacle of Moses and the Bronze Altar to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving to God.

God was pleased with Solomon and offered to grant his greatest desire. Solomon asked God for an understanding heart – for wisdom to govern God’s people well and justly. The Chronicles account reads this way: “Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (2 Chronicles 1:10 NLT)

God gave Solomon wisdom and an understanding heart and blessed him with riches and power as well.

Application:

I want to please God as Solomon did, desiring to serve and influence others with wisdom, knowledge, and an understanding heart. This has been my prayer for as long as I can remember. I desire to have an understanding heart so I can see and understand both sides of difficult issues, so I can know right from wrong, and so I can influence others to make wise choices.

Prayer:

Father, today I pray again my simple prayer… Please give me an understanding heart so that I will know right from wrong, understand both sides of difficult issues, and influence others to make wise decisions. Please grant me wisdom, knowledge, and understanding and use me effectively for your purpose. Amen.
