Also Bless These

Also Bless These

6 So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, thanked God for them, broke them into pieces, and gave them to his disciples, who distributed the bread to the crowd. 7 A few small fish were found, too, so Jesus also blessed these and told the disciples to pass them out. (Mark 8:6-7 NLT)

I love the way the chapter begins: “… Another great crowd…” and “… out of food again!” Haven’t we been here before? Yes, and it’s probably not the last time!

Jesus cared about the people’s physical needs and addressed those needs in a practical way. “Let’s feed them!” The resources were meager – seven loaves – but Jesus took the loaves and thanked God for them, then began the miracle process of blessing, breaking, giving, and sharing. There was more than enough for everyone!

Somewhere in the process, someone in the crowd decided to contribute a few small dried, smoked fish. Jesus also blessed these! Then the miracle became bread and fish instead of only bread.

I’ve been sitting here this morning giving thanks for my “seven loaves.” I’ve thanked God for my family, my friends, my home, my food and my stuff. I’m thanking him for the gifts and abilities he has given me. I’m thankful for each opportunity I have to encourage or teach or counsel. I’m once again putting it all in the hands of Jesus and yes, once again, he’ll probably break it before he does something miraculous!

I hope these thoughts encourage you to give thanks for your “seven loaves” and find a “few small fish” that Jesus can also bless!

Father, thank you for every blessing and provision you give me. Sometimes, in the face of the need, it seems so little. Thank you for caring for me, providing for me, and for trusting me with my “seven loaves.” Please multiply it until there is enough to get it done. And if we find a few small fish, please also bless these. Amen.
