A God-Listening Heart

A God-Listening Heart

18 May 2010

Today’s Reading: 1 Kings 3; 2 Chronicles 1; Psalm 78; 2 Thessalonians 2

Scripture:

“Here’s what I want: Give me a God-listening heart so I can lead your people well, discerning the difference between good and evil. For who on their own is capable of leading your glorious people?” (1 Kings 3:9 MSG)

Solomon was in a unique situation. Can you imagine what it would be like for the God of Heaven and Earth to appear to you in a dream and say, “I am pleased with you. Ask me for anything you want.” Solomon could have asked for anything he wanted, but he wisely replied, “Here’s what I want: Please give me a God-listening heart so I can lead your people well.”

God was doubly pleased with Solomon’s answer and not only gave him the hearing heart and the wisdom and knowledge he asked for but blessed him with prosperity and power and influence beyond his years and beyond his borders.

Recently my friend Gary told me about a moment when he sat quietly and heard God speaking to his heart. It was real, personal, and powerful. I can tell that it made a difference in how Gary sees himself, his relationship with God, and his ability to carry out his God-assignment.

I want a God-listening heart. I want a heart that listens for God’s whispers, questions, offers, instructions, and promises. As I read the scripture this morning I thought about my life-long prayer to God for wisdom. Through the years there have been many circumstances, situations, and needs that have prompted earnest requests to God. But the one prayer that my heart continually offers to God is the request for wisdom – wisdom to see as God sees, to hear as God hears, and to think as God thinks.

Prayer:

Father, Please give me the gift of a God-listening heart. I’m desperate for your wisdom, your knowledge, and your understanding. May I hear your voice, understand your heart, and think as you think. May I speak and act with your wisdom in all my relationships and responsibilities. I pray for my friends who are reading this – please speak to their hearts with your wisdom and grace for the challenges they face today. Amen.
