A Brand-new Nature

A Brand-new Nature

07 December 2009

…For you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you. (Colossians 3:9-10 NLT)

Paul explained to the Colossians that becoming a Christian believer was like an old sick person dying and a new healthy person being born. Living the Christian life is like taking off old ragged, dirty, smelly clothes and putting on new, fresh, clean clothes.

The old nature we strip off has produced thoughts and actions that keep us filthy, smelly, and sick. The new nature we put on produces healthy thoughts and actions and our new nature just keeps growing to be more and more like Jesus Christ.

Paul is very specific about the actions that grow out of and express the old nature: Sexual sin, impurity, lust, greed, anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, dirty language. He is just as clear on the actions that proceed from our new nature in Christ: tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness to others, making allowance for the faults of others, peace, and love.

If my life is characterized by the actions of the old nature, I need to act decisively and swiftly to “put it to death,” and if my life is marked by the actions of the new nature, I’m growing daily in my faith and Christian character.

The old nature or the new nature. It’s my choice and my choices that determine which grows stronger and which produces my observable behavior.

Father, I choose today to put off the old nature of self and sin and put on the new nature in Christ. I know that there is a spiritual mystery at work on the inside when I make the right choice and exercise the right behaviors. I will choose to put off the old self and put on Christ – daily. In Jesus’ Name.
