Scripture:
33 Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. When they went into a house there, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But the followers did not answer, because their argument on the road was about which one of them was the greatest. 35 Jesus sat down and called the twelve apostles to him. He said, “Whoever wants to be the most important must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then Jesus took a small child and had him stand among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said, 37 “Whoever accepts a child like this in my name accepts me. And whoever accepts me accepts the One who sent me.” (Mark 9:33-37 NCV)
Observation:
The disciples were so human; just like we are. The things that Jesus was teaching and demonstrating were so counter-cultural; just as they are today. If you want to be first; then be the servant of all. But if people see me serving won’t they think I’m last in line? Position was so important to the disciples; something they talked about a lot and argued about even.
Application:
Are we any different today? We are still competing for position and recognition. Still afraid to serve because of how we think people will see us. Serving is still counter-cultural in today’s society. But that does not change what Jesus said; ‘Be the servant of all’.
Prayer:
Lord, sometimes it is so hard to remember that recognition and position are not the important things. Help me to serve you and others and let you determine position and recognition. I love you. AMEN
Lord, the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you and those who trust you is so great. Your love to me is wonderful. Ps 31:19, 21
