Scripture:
1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, and his followers went with him. 2 On the Sabbath day he taught in the synagogue. Many people heard him and were amazed, saying, “Where did this man get these teachings? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? And where did he get the power to do miracles? 3 He is just the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters are here with us.” So the people were upset with Jesus. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his hometown and with his own people and in his own home.” 5 So Jesus was not able to work any miracles there except to heal a few sick people by putting his hands on them. 6 He was amazed at how many people had no faith. Then Jesus went to other villages in that area and taught. (Mark 6:1-6 NCV)
Observation:
The people in Jesus’ hometown were first of all impressed with his wisdom and speaking ability. But then they started thinking, ‘but he’s just a carpenter, Mary’s boy’. How much they limited who He was and all that He could have done for them because of what they thought they knew of him. How sad that He had to leave them after laying hands on a few sick and healing them.
Application:
Do I do the same when I look at people and who I think they are and what they are able to do? I think we sometimes limit the Jesus in people because of how we perceive them and what they can do.
Prayer:
Jesus I don’t want to be like the people in Your hometown and limit what You can do in and through people. Help me to see the best in others and not to say, but they are only……… AMEN
Father God, there is no god like you; no works like yours. You are great and do miracles. Only you are God. Thank you. Psalm 86:8-10
